Vic Morgan Blog: The Greatest Ever..?
BBC Devon’s Vic Morgan is back for 2012/13, continuing his weekly blog only here on The Washbag.
It’s always a difficult judgement isn’t it? The greatest in anything. It’s always in the eye of the beholder. What is a great performance to one person is average to another.
Elsewhere on this illustrious website is a list of Ron’s top ten Town games. I wouldn’t disagree with many, but obviously I have my own favourites.
At number one will always remain Wembley 1969. A day I will never forget. No M4 in those days, and a pitch that resembled marshland after the summer of 2012. A third division side beats one of the country’s best in a major cup final. That can NEVER be beaten as far as I’m concerned it just can’t.
Tuesday’s win over Stoke though is right up there though. These days the gulf between the Premier League and the rest is massive. Money has made the top level of the game as distant for many clubs as the Mars Rover is to a trip up the M5.
Two wins over Premier League sides in eight months is incredible. Like Wigan, Stoke would have fancied a decent cup run. The Capitol One Cup would have been a good shout for them to have got close to Wembley. So to have beaten them in their own back yard, is one of the Town’s best ever without doubt.
Of course it comes off the back of Swindon’s terrific start to the League One campaign. Another win, this time against a decent MK Dons outfit. The football, particularly in the first half, was excellent. That stat of one goal conceded at home in nineteen league games is outrageous. It’s vital in football not to concede, and generally teams that are strong defensively may not have the prettiest style of play.
Not so for PDC’s boys. This is not towing the party line, it’s a fact. Swindon play in a responsible attacking way, not seen since the days of Ardilles and Hoddle.
So now, right now, is a moment to cherish. As we know football can change very quickly. One minute you’re right up in the clouds, the next you’re down in that boggy marshland I mentioned earlier.
Even though I wasn’t there on Tuesday because of work, I still swelled with pride. Anyone who wants to listen to me will always be instantly aware of my Swindon connections. Even in the bad days be proud of your club. Right now shout it from the roof tops. STFC are well and truly on the march. No need to be quiet about that is there ?
Off to Deepdale Sunday for the first time in 26 years. Yes its been a while. I remember the three nil win there last time very well. Coyne, Henry and Ramsay on target on a plastic pitch. Should be a belter, with North End also on a high after a great midweek cup win.
Can’t wait can you…?
Keep it loud, keep it proud, keep it SWINDON
Vic

Shout it loud indeed. When I was at University in Bristol in 1971 no-one I met was in any doubt about who I supported. Now, 41 years later no-one I work with in Sydney, socialise with have coffee with, communicate with via email or meet casually has any doubt who I support.
In fact, during my wedding speech I called my lovely bride Susan “Swindon” by mistake – that was in 1993. We’ve been together 31 years in total and she’s forgiven me now.
1963 to 1972 was an amazing time to be a Swindon fan. Now isn’t quite up there yet – but it’s getting closer.

Lovely comment Steve and great that Susan understands. Even on the opposite side of the planet the Town’s support is strong, fantastic.
