The Annual Second Round Break…

Former BBC Wiltshire match commentator Vic Morgan writes his weekly blog…

Our break on FA Cup Second Round weekend is almost as traditional now as the event on December the 25th. It’s the weekend when a Swindon fans can relax and find pursuits that they wouldn’t normally get up to on a Saturday during the football season.

They can also have the day off feeling pretty good after the win against Bradford City last Saturday.

It seemed after the defeat against Rochdale a fortnight ago, that there was nothing but hard times ahead. A draw at Southend and the victory over the Bantams has put a better light on things.

I’ve written before how I think Anton Rodgers gets unfair criticism from some fans. Well his goal against Bradford last week may well have given him cause to smile more than a little.

The free kick that produced the winner was stunning. Having watched it live and then several times on replay, there’s no doubt it’s one of the goals of the season. Beautifully placed in the top corner giving the goalkeeper no chance.

The Town also produced another fine defensive display. With the visitors flying high it might have seemed one of the tougher home matches of the season, but with Swindon’s new resolution the City team couldn’t find a way past.

The return of Jon Obika has also proved a real positive. There’s no doubt Swindon look better with him in the team. His willingness to work hard and hold up the ball makes a difference.

So has the corner been turned? Well obviously there’s a long way to go but there’s no doubt things are looking better. That improvement though is bound to be tested next weekend at Sheffield United. More on that next week.

So what will you be up to over the weekend? Putting up the festive decorations perhaps, getting the presents early, or just watching the results of other games come in. It’s odd when we don’t play but it does give you a chance to switch off from worrying about football and that’s quite a bonus at this time of the year.

Me? I’ll be taking part in a vintage cycle ride along Exmouth sea front in fancy dress. Odd but true and a real laugh. Hope it warms up!

I’ll still be keeping it loud keeping it proud keeping it SWINDON!
