Lee Clark’s 2013/14 Hopes and Expectations

TheWashbag contributor Lee Clark gives his thoughts ahead of the 2013/14 season…

What are your hopes and expectations for Swindon in 2013/14?

I realistically hope we can finish mid-table and have a good cup run. What with all the new faces on and off the field, it really is a period of transition and if we were to finish in tenth or above then with the players developing as they gain a bit of experience we’d be in a fantastic position to challenge next year.

Who has been your signing of the summer at the County Ground?

I think purely on the basis that Peterborough were after him and we beat them to the signature, it would have to be Alex Pritchard. They will be in the mix come May, and they are always a good footballing side- which is what we are aspiring to be. He’s also quite highly thought of in the England Under 20 set up, which although it doesn’t neccesarily mean he’s going to be a world-beater, he must have some talent.

Who will be the key player for Town?

I think Darren Ward’s experience will be absolutely crucial if he is still at the club at the start of the season. His strength in the air will go a long way to negate the impact of the loss of Flint. I don’t think a club can really afford to have two centre-halfs who have very little experience- any young player playing in that position at a competive level needs someone who has been doing it for a long time next to him. Ward will provide this, whether it’s with Aaron Oakley or Grant Hall.

In what position will we finish?

Always the pessimist, I predict we will finish in 16th. Truthfully, I was quite concerned two weeks or so ago but the signings of Pritchard, Luongo and Byrne mean that we are two or three players short of being a comfortable mid-table outfit.

Which teams will be promoted from League One?

I think it is between three of Bristol City, Wolves, Peterborough, Brentford and Preston. I’m going to predict that Bristol City and Preston will be the unlucky pair of those five to miss out.

Which teams are set to be relegated from League One?

Despite the size of them, a club in the situation that Coventry is in will always find it hard to beat the drop. I predict that Colchester, Carlisle and Tranmere will join them.
