Match Preview: Swindon Town vs Carlisle United

Form Guide…

5th placed Swindon are set to play their third successive League One game as hosts and hopes are raised for for another high-scoring match after two 5-nil wins against Tranmere Rovers and Portsmouth.

Town have won three, drawn one and lost twice in the past six games, including the current run of three wins on the bounce. At the County Ground, Swindon are unbeaten in three games.

Carlisle United travel to Wiltshire on the back of  a 1-nil defeat at Crewe on New Years Day which leaves them in 17th and 8 points clear of the relegation zone.

United have won three and lost three of their previous six League One games. Away from Brunton park, Carlisle have lost their previous two games and only won once – 3-1 at Yeovil – in seven games.

Town are now ranked 3rd most efficient hosts, and remain strongest in defence as hosts with a ranking of 3rd in League One, compared to 6thth most efficient in attack.

Swindon’s recently strong home defensive record is helped by the tightest defence in the division, restricting opponents to the fewest shots per game and shots on target. With the recent clean sheets, even Foderingham’s save rate has jumped from 21st to 10th strongest of all hosts.

Carlisle have controlled possession and created plenty of chances on their travels however their inability to test the ‘keeper, let alone hit the back of the net, has cost them vital points away from Brunton Park.

SCORED 1-15 16-30 31-45 45+ 46-60 61-75 76-90 90+

Swindon just score when we want at the moment…

Carlisle have yet to make an early impression and score in the opening 15 minutes of an away game in League One.

CONCEDED 1-15 16-30 31-45 45+ 46-60 61-75 76-90 90+
STFC (as hosts) 2 0 2 0 3 1 0 0
Carlisle (away) 1 4 5 0 0 4 1 1

Carlisle are tight at the beginning of each halve, but then their opponents typically find a way to break them down.

My prediction…

Our near perfect home record against Carlisle was ruined on their previous visit. After two 5-nil victories Town must continue to improve upon the all-important goal difference with a solid victory.

3-0 to Swindon…

Come on You Reds!
