Fraser’s Greatest Game: Swindon 0 West Ham Utd 0 28th January 1989

TheWashbag recently asked Swindon Town goalkeeping legend Fraser Digby what was his greatest performance in our red & white in our interview…

“Memorable games were ones I always had against West Ham United as I always seem to play well against them. I remember we had a cup game at the County Ground and that was certainly my best performance in a Swindon shirt. I saved a point-blank header from David Kelly… it was just one of those games where they threw everything at us, and me, but I saved it.”

So here it is, unearthed courtesy of Swindon-Town-FC.co.uk, BBC Points West highlights and full match footage of the FA Cup Fourth Round tie between Swindon Town and West Ham United on 28th January 1989 – which the Hammers won the replay 1-0.

  • I was there at that game! Growing up, I only ever played in goal. I’d never play outfield because Fraser Digby was my hero and I wanted to be just like him. My Mum would take one look at my muddy knees and elbows and just knew I’d been throwing myself around like a loon in goal. I only ever wanted goalie gloves or a goalie shirt for Christmas or birthday all because of Fraser. One year I was given a goalie glove bag and I cried with happiness. Sadly, although I wasn’t too bad between the posts I could never match Fraser for his quality. I may not have been able to play like him, but I sure did think I was him each time I pulled off a save. As for that game, Fraser had a stormer, I remember it well. Such an excellent stopper and as a bonus it was all for my team as well.
