Match Preview: Swindon Town vs Leyton Orient

Form Guide…

8th placed Swindon lost their previous outing at Preston 4-1 and then went down to a 1-0 defeat at Oxford in midweek. At the County Ground, Swindon are unbeaten in 28 league and cup matches, a run stretching back to a 1-3 defeat by Southampton on the 30th August 2011. Also, in 2012, Town have only conceded twice in 18 games as hosts.

Second bottom Orient have lost all 3 League One games this season, scoring 1 goal and conceding 5.

Swindon-Town-FC.co.uk Head-to-Head…

In all League, FA Cup and Football League competitions, Town have faced Leyton Orient on 77 occasions, winning 26, drawing 24 and defeated 27 times; scoring 105 and conceding 95.

At the County Ground, Swindon have 19 wins, 12 draws and 8 defeats, scoring 72 and conceding 38.

Town haven’t won in this fixture in four attempts. The last meeting was a 0-3 defeat at Brisbane Road in February 2011 which effectively sealed our relegation from League One. The last victory was a 3-2 win at the County Ground in League One in December 2009 with goals from Billy Paynter and Charlie Austin (2).

Swindon-Town-FC.co.uk History Book…

Swindon first met Clapton Orient in the United League in 1905 – a competition the Town used as a secondary competition to the usual Southern League campaign. The return match in the same competition – a 3-1 win for the O’s – attracted just 1,000 fans, but the next match between the sides, some 22 years later, attracted the biggest attendance to date between the two sides, 19,000 fans witnessing a 2-1 win for Swindon at the County Ground in the FA Cup. Since then, the O’s have undergone three name changes – firstly from Clapton Orient to Leyton Orient, then to plain Orient and back again.

Swindon’s 2 game League One run without conceding as hosts isn’t just about Wes, as Town’s back line restrict the opposition to the fewest number of shots per game at the County Ground.

Not much to go on at this early stage in the season, however Town have been strongest and most clinical in the first half and in the final minutes of the half.

Orient are vulnerable after the break.

My prediction…

Do I go for another 2-0 Swindon victory, a result which hasn’t been correct all season? Might as well give it a go… Andy Williams and John Bostock score in a Town victory.

A lot depends on whether Ritchie and Collins are available. Assuming, “Troy of the Rovers” isn’t fit, My hoped for line up is Wes, Nate Thompson, Macca, Flint, Bessone, Miller, Ferry, Ritchie, Collins, Williams, Bostik.

Subs: Bedders, Roberts (That’s a hope), Benno, Guns of Navarone, Joe D., MCKeveley, Rooney (A),.

“Tixzer” is injured and Rooney (L) is out of favour. Darren Ward might start but that would prompt a “fortissimo” response.

Expect Orient to have watched on Wednesday night and possibly we will get a lot of “up and under”.
