Match Preview: Swindon vs Burton Albion

Form… First placed Swindon are currently on a run of one defeat – at Torquay on Boxing Day – in twenty League Two matches. Town’s current form guide reads nine League wins in a row, which is a new club record.

At the County Ground, Town are unbeaten since August, making it 13 games without tasting defeat and 35 points from a possible 39. Swindon have won their last seven games as hosts with only one goal conceded in nine games.

15th placed Burton Albion are in free fall, having lost all early season form with a run of nine games without a victory.

In their previous six League Two outings, the Brewers have drawn three and lost three.

Away from Staffordshire, Burton are without a win in five games after a run of one win, two draws and three defeats.

Swindon-Town-FC.co.uk Head-to-Head… The sides have only faced each other once before, that was earlier this season when Burton Albion came out on top following a 2-0 victory; memorable… or not…for Mattia Lanzano’s goalkeeping masterclass…

What The Stats Say… Burton are ranked the 11th efficient side in League Two according to our latest combined home and away League Two rankings. Swindon are ranked top.

Our rankings show the Brewers are ranked 12th based on away efficiency alone.

On their travels, Burton allow an average of 13.3 shots against per game (ranked 21st) with 50% of these on target (ranked 12th).  However, the last line of defence hasn’t been up to the task saving 71% of shots which is ranked 12th in League Two.  You can also expect Swindon to win a high number of corners tomorrow with Burton conceding an average of 7.3 per game (ranked 22nd).

Turning to Burton’s attacking areas, their lowly average of 8.8 shots per game (ranked 18th) is more than made up through the accuracy in front of goal. 55.3% of Burton’s shots on their travels have been on target (ranked 2nd) and a staggering 18% of shots have been scored (ranked 3rd). This hints at their attacking accuracy has been the key so far away from home and if only mistakes elsewhere were rectified, the Brewers would secure a top half finish.

The attacking efficiency is reflected in the number of goals scored, with 26 of the 44 coming on their travels. This tally has been bettered by only four other sides; Cheltenham, Gillingham, Rotherham and Southend. You can count on Burton to score the majority after the break with 17 in the second half, including seven in the final 15 minutes.

In defence, the Brewers have conceded 31 which is the joint worst record in the division…they really are a Jekyll and Hyde team… The 15 minute periods either side of half time are when Burton are at their weak point, conceding 15 goals between 31-60 minutes.

As I keep saying…..Swindon Town have still yet to concede in time added on home or away this season…

Kickoff.co.uk Prediction…

Result: Swindon Win 82% | Burton Win 4% | Draw 14%

Full time result: Swindon 2-0 15% | Swindon 3-0 13%| Swindon 1-0 12% | Swindon 2-1 9% | Swindon 1-1 7%

My prediction… This has to be ten wins in a row against a Burton side in free fall.

A 2-0 Swindon victory seems the right result and the analysts also have that down as the most likely scoreline.

  • I work in Burton (the photo at the top of this thread looks like it could have been taken from our office window, not a great view!) the news boards for the local paper are all about their injured striker. Talking to supporters they are very aware how different both sides are from When they last met..

    Come on you reds..
