Vic Morgan Blog: The day the title was won?
The ramblings of BBC Devon’s Vic Morgan..
You know when your team isn’t playing well, but you still win…?
You leave the ground thinking, that could be the day when the footballing gods are smiling on us, and things are written..?
Well, that was me last Saturday.
I was telling anyone who cared to listen, and several who didn’t, that the League Two title was on its way to the County Ground.
I think you’ll agree, the game against Macclesfield wasn’t a classic. For a while it looked like results would go against us, and we’d drop crucial points.
However we saw the introduction of Luke Rooney, and his wonderful cross was brilliantly headed in by Paul Benson. It was a lovely goal, and worthy of winning any match.
Young Mr. Rooney immediately endeared himself to the Town fans, with a cameo performance full of enthusiasm. He also made me feel really old. From where I was sitting in the Arkell’s, he looked like he’d just come from school. A great debut though, and he could have scored a tremendous individual goal which would really have capped it off.
All of a sudden all the other results went our way, and we’re just three points off the top…fantastic stuff. Yes I believe it’s written.
HOT UNDER THE COLLAR…
Well it was a shove wasn’t it..?
No question that Aden Flint was pushed at the Stratton Bank End, but the officials failed to give the free kick. Paolo, like many Town fans, was a little annoyed by the decision. He reacted in the way only he can.
Now one of the joys of watching the Town, is observing our manager during the game. He’s non- stop, living every moment and kicking every ball. Don’t know about you, but I love seeing that amount of feeling. I understand there’s a line that must not be crossed, and I think we all know that. But I think sometimes a little leeway should be given.
As long as a reaction isn’t abusive then just tell people to calm down and not send them off. Paolo’s after match rant was fantastic, and every Swindon fan would have loved it. He’s our boss and long may he remain so.
HERE WE GO AGAIN…
It’s FA Cup Round Four, and we go to the East Midlands.
The shock of the round against Wigan, can we do it again against Leicester….?
The spectre of too many games is looming large, but that of course means a team is being successful. It’s up to the manager to balance the squad and see them through the workload to come.
Saturday’s game brings back many memories of previous encounters of course, not least one of the greatest games in the old Wembley’s history.
It was bonkers…you know the story.
Three up, three-all and Paul Bodin’s penalty finally putting us in the top flight for the first and only time.
It was a thrilling game. Still haven’t quite got over the feeling though when Leicester got level. All I can remember is the blue half of the stadium going crazy, while the red half sat deathly quiet……and then went crazy as the spot kick went in.
There were mad games at the old Filbert Street, where a couple of Town sendings off led to dramatic Leicester fight backs. It also meant this reporter constantly having to rewrite his full time report. Would I give up a win Saturday for promotion and the JPT…? Don’t ask me that question, I want to be greedy this season…because it IS written.
