FA Cup 1st Round Preview: Swindon v Huddersfield

Form… The match sees the form teams in League One and League Two meet in the FA Cup First Round tie.

Swindon have been unbeaten in 8 matches since a 2-1 victory at Exeter in the JPT in late September. The run includes 5 victories and 3 draws, scoring 13 and conceding 5 goals.

Meanwhile Huddersfield travel to Swindon on the back of 42 games unbeaten in League One, having only been defeated this season after extra time against Cardiff City in the League Cup and Bradford City in the JPT.

Swindon Team Speculation… Lukas Magera limped off midweek against AFC Wimbledon and may struggle to be fit in time for Saturday.

After securing five successive clean sheets, Wes Foderingham will be eligible to appear for Swindon in the FA Cup after his parent team Crystal Palace gave permission to play in the game. Foderingham won’t be able to equal Peter Downsborough’s club record successive clean sheet tally of six on Saturday as that record is for League matches only.

Other loanees Jake Jervis and Liam Ridehalgh have not be allowed by Birmingham City and Huddersfield to play for Town.

West Ham loanee Ahmed Abdulla is also ineligible but he would have been unable to play anyway due to his injury.

Huddersfield Speculation… Terriers manager Lee Clark will be forced to change his XI as Jordan Rhodes will be away on international duty, meaning Danny Ward could be in line for a start against his former side. The match is expected to allow Clark to play some of his fringe players.

Swindon-Town-FC.co.uk Head-to-Head… In the 43 Football League and Cup matches between the sides, Swindon have won 18 games, drawn 11 and defeated on 14 occasions, scoring 64 and conceding 55.

The sides have met twice in the FA Cup with Swindon coming out on top on both occasions.

The first meeting on 1st February 1913 at Leeds Road in the 2nd Round was also the first ever meeting between the sides. A Harold Fleming inspired Southern League playing Swindon won 2-1 against a then Division Two Terriers side.

It took 89 years for the next FA Cup meeting, a 1-0 victory to Swindon at the County Ground in a 1st Round tie in November 2002 thanks to Andy Gurney.

Our overall record at the County Ground is strong, with 12 wins, 3 draws and 6 defeats from the 21 matches, scoring 39 and conceding 23. Town are unbeaten in our previous 2 meetings at home.

Swindon FA Cup Record… Swindon have played 331 matches in the FA Cup, winning 164, drawing 53 and defeated on 114 occasions.

In those 331 matches 648 goals have been scored and 465 conceded.

Four of our biggest ever victories have come in the FA Cup including; 10-1 over Farnham United Breweries in November 1925, 9-0 over Maidenhead United in 1890, 9-0 over Poole in 1903 and another 9-0 against Whiteheads in 1902.

Swindon’s best performance in the FA Cup was a semi-final appearance in 1910 and 1912.

In modern times, Town have made the Quarter Final on two occasions in 1923/24 and 1969/70.

Since that Quarter Final in 1969/70, Swindon have been defeated in the 1st Round 5 times, 2nd Round 5 times, 3rd Round 16 times, 4th Round 13 times and twice in the 5th Round in 1991/92 and 1995/96.

Of those 41 seasons, Swindon have failed to progress beyond their first tie on 15 occasions. Town had their worst barren run of failing to win an FA Cup match for 4 seasons between 1996/97 and 1999/00 under Steve McMahon and Jimmy Quinn.

Swindon have not made it past the 3rd Round since that run to a 5th Round tie with Southampton and eventual replay defeat in 1995/96 as a Division Two side.

Since that run to the 5th Round, Town have been knocked out in the 3rd Round by Everton, Stevenage, Barnsley, Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Barnet and Fulham.

My prediction… This is one of the toughest FA Cup 1st Round ties possible for Swindon. Fortunately we’ve been drawn with the home advantage and I can see us continuing our excellent unbeaten run against our League One opponents. If you’re asking me for a score prediction then I’d say 2-0 to Swindon…chance will be a fine thing.

We do look slightly weaker without our loanees, particularly up front and with an injury to Magera. Especially since we will need to be clinical against a team from a higher division and that isn’t something anyone could accuse Kerrouche of ever being.

At least one loanee – Wes Foderingham – will be available for Saturday. Fair play to Palace to allow him to play for us in the Cup. I’d rather have Wes in the team anyday, even after Smith’s heroics against AFC Wimbledon in the JPT.
