A West Ham view on Ahmed Abdulla

To continue the theme of obtaining the views of our new signing’s former / parent club, Matt Ryan from Claretandblues.com answers a few questions on loan signing Ahmed Abdulla.

Ahmed has been at West Ham for some time since joining from Arsenal as a 16 year old. How has he progressed?

Since Joining West Ham in 2008 Ahmed has made steady progress for The Hammers reserves. He has become a regular starter, usually knocking in a goal or two! Although the odd injury here and there has limited his appearances a little more than would have probably liked. He usually plays as a forward or just in front of the midfield in a kind of 4-4-1-1. Unfortunately the competition for forwards in the reserves is quote strong so he has done well to play the games he has.

What expectations do Hammers fans have for Ahmed?

To be honest when he joined the team he was a youth player and not many people had heard of him but as the months and years went by he progressed to a regular reserve team player and began to catch the eye of one or two fans. Ahmed really pushed himself during the pre-season period and a few fans were starting see a player that could possible push for a start this season.

Was Ahmed ever in with a shout for first team football? Did he ever make the bench?

As previously said, if he was ever going to make the first team, it would have been this season. Although with the quality of players the club have brought in now it seems very unlikely that will happen. Personally I think he should have been given a chance towards the end of last season but the in capabilities of our previous manager soon put paid to any of those plans.

Does Ahmed have any particular strengths or weaknesses in his technical ability or mentality?

Ahmed is a fast, clever player and will 9 times out of 10 be in the right place at the right time. His ability to read a game is, what I think has made him the success he is at West Ham. If I had to suggest a weakness it would be his rashness and his tendency to rush ahead of the game.

Is a loan move to Swindon the right move for him?

Absolutely! I’m assuming Paolo will be giving him first team experience and that can only be a good thing for a player like Ahmed, Not only is it good for him but it’s good for Swindon too! He’ll knock a few in for you.

I’m afraid I have to totally dis agree with Claret&Blues comments about Abdulla. He has never been anywhere near the 1st team and I doubt very much he would have been this year also. We have the likes of Sears and Stanislas who were struggling to get on the bench and Stanislas has since left as a result. There is also a new batch of kids who are slightly younger than Abdulla, like Hall and Tombides who will overtake him. I think this move is achnace to give some experience and if he does well then Swindon might want to keep him permantly.

Thanks for that view. Where do you see his best position and how well has he made the move from a striker to a midfielder. Di Canio will be playing a 4-4-2 here and I’m struggling to see where he will fit in if he’s been playing behind a striker in a 4-4-1-1

Sorry AcademyHammer but there are a lot of West Ham fan’s that would disagree with you and that statement and having spoken to Ahmed personally on a social networking site, I can tell you that he is a very open and honest person.

I, along with a lot of other Hammers think he would have been given a chance in the Championship and still think he might when he returns from loan.

Alex Dyer always spoke VERY highly of Ahmed and Kevin Keen tried hard to get Grant to give him a chance. If we had been a Championship side at the time and it was any manager apart from Avram Grant, I think he woudl have got that chance.
