A Barnet view on Joe Devera’s move to Swindon

Barnet fan Lucy Waldon gives the lowdown on Swindon Town’s latest signing, 24 year old defender Joe Devera, who joins on a free transfer.

As a Barnet fan, I’ve seen Joe Devera progressed massively – arising from the youth (Protec) team and cementing his place in the first team’s back four. He can play at either Centre Back or Right Back – although plays better in the centre as he doesn’t conform to the typical wingback i.e. getting forward.

He’s committed and not afraid to get stuck in with the tackles. At one stage he was captain, so can command the defensive line; however one key weakness would probably have to be his distribution – maybe playing in a better side defensively, may correct that. Despite his height, he’s reasonably strong as well and decent in the air.

At Barnet he received the ‘Player of the Season’ award twice (although not sure how good that is, given our previous League finishes and performances over the season).

I’d say Joe was a reasonably big part of the squad – a regular throughout the last couple of years – and obviously will be a massive loss to the club and fairly big to replace, particularly given the fact we’ll see or receive no money for him.

The club and fans alike knew his contract was up at the end of the season, so it’s devastating he’ll be leaving on a free. Not sure if I’d have liked to see him go last January for some though, as he was integral in the back four; the fact he’s now over 24 also means we’ll see no compensation for him – meaning we’ll have to look for free agents to replace him.

Obviously, he is going to be replaceable, but we haven’t really delved into the market yet, which is slightly worrying.

It’d be a good move for him if he plays regularly. However, I am not sure how he will compare to standard of your current defence. Although, Championship clubs were previously after him (Reading and Millwall), we were surprised to see him in stay in League 2, as he’s definitely League 1 standard.

But good luck to him, he deserves to play in a better team.
