Managers Countdown: Ted Vizard
Ted Vizard became our second Football League manger under the worst possible circumstances. In 1933 Town finished bottom of Division Three South and were re-elected. In bringing in Vizard, he became our first manager in the modern sence, on professional terms, full time and with a footballing pedigree, having played as an outside left for Bolton Wanderers 467 times, appearing in 3 FA Cup finals and winning 22 caps for Wales.
In his first full season, Ted took a much altered Town side, with only four players remaining from the previous campaign, to finish a respectable 8th on 45 points.
Thereafter Ted couldn’t beat either the league position and points total, coming narrowly close to facing re-election again in 1935/36 with a 19th place finish and having been beaten by non-league Southall in the FA Cup. Despite this awful season the Board wouldn’t accept Vizard’s offer to resign.
It could’ve been so different in 1937/38 with Ted’s best chance to make a lasting impression. With six games to go and a game in-hand, Town were unbeaten in seven games and only 3 points behind leaders Watford. 4 defeats and 2 draws later saw Town limp across the finishing line, 12 points off the promotion place.
After a 9th place finish, again not really threatening a promotion place, at the end of the 1938/39 season Ted took over at fellow Division Three South outfit QPR.
His experience at QPR was curtailed by successes in wartime football and in 1944 Vizard joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, taking Wolves to 3rd place in the First Division first peacetime season. Ted was replaced in 1948 by his assistant Stan Cullis, Wolves never looked back.
Good, Bad or Ugly? – Bad – Despite some reasonable finishes, Ted just couldn’t make any lasting impression at the top of the league. Perhaps the Board should’ve accepted his offer to resign earlier.
