League One Form Table: Swindon desperately need to improve

Just over a week ago I posted the alternative League One table, showing the teams sorted by points won per game and the predicted points total.

Now after today’s second goalless draw in a week at home to Exeter City here is an updated version….Swindon supporters may wish to avert your eyes.

The table is based on current form and inspired by a response to a thread on the Brighton ‘North Stand Chat’ forum that commented on my earlier alternative table.

The predicted points total is based on home and away form. This ensures that this key variable is taken into account, as for instance, Swindon are significantly better at home than we are away, however we have 8 home and 11 away games remaining.

Brighton are still head and shoulders above the rest. Bournemouth cement their 2nd place position and show Town will be in with a very tough task of taking anything away this Tuesday night. Charlton move up to 5th.

In the basement, Swindon will finish with 49 points with a sizeable gap opening to Yeovil and Plymouth. We’re looking doomed…

2 points in the last two home games isn’t enough, despite the more promising performances. Things can change quickly depending on the new forwards Wilson can bring in…although he did find a new left winger this afternoon in Alan O’Brien.

An improved display against Tranmere still lacking belief and a much better team effort in both halves against Exeter should have yielded 4 points, but as so often, past performance dictates future performance.

When looking at the points gained both home and away, and matching each teams’s blended home and away strength (based not only on h/a points gained but also total points and form), and using this to determine projected points for of the remaining games, the table for the first time does read very similar to the one above.
Brighton and Bournemouth to go up and Charlton ahead of Huddersfield, Southampton and Oldham.

The bottom 4 the same, with Walsall and Dag&Red changing places – but down is down….

The only way is up therefore… but is it? It’s difficult to see how we can string a win together other than the Walsall game based on our performance to date.
Tomorrow will see us taking on a team who has won more than 75% of their home games and tend to score 3 times as much as the opposition. A point would be good here.

But next Saturday’s game at home against Rochdale, seems therefore a much better proposition to get some points until you look at recent form.

Rochdale is the only team that has not lost in the last 6 games and have gained the most points during that time (14 out of 18), so a team in form , whilst we have gained just the 5 points.

As we prepare for a tough time ahead, Plymouth and Brentford are the only teams whose form is worse than ours……

Something has to change, and change quickly, starting with some refreshments up-front as no good keeping a clean sheet if you’re unable to knock ’em in….

Still hopeful we can turn the tide and move mid table…
