Danny Wilson: Keep the faith?

At the final whistle ‘Keep The Faith’ by Bon Jovi blasted out of the County Ground PA following Town’s 2-1 defeat by Bournemouth in the opening League One encounter of 2011.

Whether or not this music choice was a deliberate attempt by the club hierarchy to stand behind Danny Wilson and ask the same of the support, or simply a rousing tune following a defeat is beside the point as we’re all just in a state of bemusement that we find ourselves in this situation in the first place.

Why hasn’t this club, please note ‘club’ not ‘team’, capitalised on the play-off final appearance in the same manner as Millwall had achieved? Should we really keep the faith with Danny Wilson?

In one sense, what use could replacing Wilson be when the transfer window is opening?

In the next 30 days Wilson has an opportunity, perhaps his final chance, to bring fresh faces to bolster and rejuvenate the team. The January transfer plans have been afoot for sometime so these will begin in earnest. Ritchie is expected to make his loan move permanent, a strike partner for Charlie is a priority as well as reinforcements for the defence. Whereas an incoming manager would be unlikely to be in a position to fully utilise the window and largely forced to work with the existing squad that we know needs changing.

Or is our problem more endemic so changes need to be made now?

Has the play-off defeat altered the player and staff mentality to such an extent that the only way to vanquish the Wembley hangover is through wholesale change of management and players? By over-achieving last season Wilson has certainly created a rod for his own back, achieved all he ever could at Swindon, so a new leader is needed to progress the club.

Like others my patience is thinning and to some extent I’m stuck between the two approaches to the situation.

On balance, what I would say is that with the right players we already know Wilson can create an fluid and attractive team to watch. He has one last opportunity with the transfer window to find the right players to spur the club on to a respectable top 10 league finish with an eye on next season. So for now, even if we lose at Charlton tomorrow, I can’t see a strong enough reason to change management and I’m keeping the faith.

What about you?

last years team on the main is still here with the exception of B.P replace him with Dossevi. Ward replace him with Matt Ritchie along with Sheehan which leaves the right hand side K.A and JP on the right. The problem is where do you put Prutton and thats why the team is unbalanced as Douglas,Ferry JP and Ritchie are much more balanced and would play more football. Its not rocket science!!
