Thomas Dossevi

Trialist Thomas Dossevi stood out during his excellent first half performance for Town in our 3-2 friendly victory over a poor Nottingham Forest yesterday afternoon.

The Frenchman, who has won 25 caps and scored 1 goal for the Togolese national team (his father Antoine Dossevi also played for Togo in the 1970s), comes to win a contract at Swindon Town. Dossevi, a right footed forward, played the 2009/2010 season with Nantes in Ligue 2 finishing a disappointing 15th with a team who won the French Championship as recent ago as 2001. He does come with experience of playing in French Ligue 1 for Valenciennes FC and FC Nantes respectively in 2006/2007 and 2008/2009 seasons.

Now at 31 he looks to ply his trade abroad for the first time and looks a fantastic attacking option to strengthen the Town front line.

Of Dossevi’s performance, Wilson said: “He can’t do anymore. He’s had a very good period here if I’m honest he’s looked very good in training and to cap it with two goals was brilliant for him.”

“The second was an excellent header as well. There was no pace on the ball and he’s generated so much from his neck muscles to give the ‘keeper no chance.

“He’s done himself a power of good so we’ll have another look at him and see what happens.”

Dossevi is exactly the type of forward we need, being a very good all-round attacker, comfortable with the ball at his feet, confident in the box and dangerous in the air. A different type of player than Vincent Pericard, who himself did very little to impress yesterday, it was strange not to see Dossevi paired with Austin during the second half. So it seems at least Dossevi will be given another chance to impress at Poole Town on Tuesday night, but on what is likely to be a very poor pitch I’m not sure what more we will learn about a quality player at this level.

Come on Wilson and Fitton, get the contracts drafted and get Dossevi to put pen to paper before the season opener against Brighton next Saturday. If not, he’ll be snapped up soon by one of our rivals, a big mistake. Signing Dossevi will also be a further sign of our intent to be the team to beat having already signed Prutton, Ball, Rose and hopefully Ferry and Caddis. Come on You Reds!
