Paynter’s Contract
Earlier today Danny Wilson revealed Bill Paynter had yet to sign a new contract with Town, which would extend his stay beyond June 2010.
With Paynter finding his scoring boots and hitting 19 league goals so far this season, there has been much recent speculation about his future.
Apparently Town offered Paynter a new contract in early January, but the original offer remains on the table. Only now has Wilson decided to put any further negotiations on hold until the end of the season due to potential ‘distractions’.
Why has it taken Paynter two months to fail to respond to the new contract which was offered? Also why hasn’t Wilson offered any improved deal within those two months, if Paynter is considered to be a key player for the team?
Has any negotiations actually taken place with Paynter and his agent?
Wilson’s answers in this Adver interview were very revealing and far from comforting to fans. It is more than clear to me that Paynter has no interest in signing any new contract until he knows which division Town will be playing in next season.
It appears that Paynter believes he will be playing in the Championship next season. Although whether this is because he wants the opportunity to play with Town in the Championship, I don’t know.
