Match Preview: Swindon Town vs Tranmere Rovers

Form Guide…

7th placed Swindon dispatched Oldham Athletic 2-0 at Boundary Park last weekend. In the League One form guide, Swindon are ranked 8th, with 3 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats in 6 matches. At the County Ground, Town are ranked 15th with an uninspiring record of 1 win, 4 draws and 1 defeat in 6 games.

Swindon face top of League One Tranmere Rovers. Playing opponents who started the game in a higher league position has been fruitful for Town this season; with two wins, two draws and zero defeats from the games against Crawley, Stevenage, Sheffield United and Doncaster.

Top of League One Tranmere Rovers have been the division’s pacesetters all season and have occupied top spot for 19 of the 22 rounds of matches. In the form guide, Rovers are sitting 14th with 1 win, 4 draws and 1 defeat. Away from The Wirral, Tranmere are 7th with 3 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat.

Tranmere have drawn their previous four matches in League One home and away. They’ve also been unbeaten in four away matches, with their last defeat a 3-1 reverse at Bournemouth in late October.

Town are ranked 10 most efficient hosts, and remain strongest in defence as hosts with a ranking of 7th in League One, compared to 15th most efficient in attack – as shown by the amount the Town defence restrict opposition chances, albeit let down by the save rate…

Tranmere are ranked the 2nd most efficient away side by our calculations. Their strongest area is their save rate – saving an average of 84.6% of shots on target.

My prediction…

We’ve a relatively good record against Tranmere and they’ve been misfiring as of late. Hopefully the 2-0 win on the road at Oldham will give Town something to build on for the festive period, so a 3-1 Swindon win on Friday night.

Come on You Reds!

One comment

  • Okay, so it was impossible to predict Swindon 5-0 Tranmere, even with your database of stats. The bit of TRFC’s save rate still held – but that bit about not conceding in the first half, well….

I’ll look forward to Adam’s match report.
