Match Preview: Swindon Town vs AFC Bournemouth

Form Guide…

8th placed Swindon won midweek at Portsmouth to put to an end a 3 match league run without a victory. Town lost our last match at the County Ground 0-1 to Leyton Orient, a result which has seemingly sparked the potential Olympic Stadium tenants into life.

17th placed AFC Bournemouth are 3 points behind Swindon in League One. The Cherries drew 2-2 at Dean Court with Brentford in midweek. On their travels Bournemouth took a victory in their last match, a 1-0 victory at Yeovil.

Swindon-Town-FC.co.uk History Book…

Swindon first met Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic in 1923 – a hat-trick by Jack Johnson ensuring a 3-0 win for the Town in Bournemouth’s first league season, after they had spent the previous three years in the Southern League. Upon entering the league, they had changed their name from Boscombe to the longest team name in any of the four divisions – it wasn’t until 1971 that they reverted to the now familiar AFC Bournemouth name, and changed their kit to AC Milan inspired red and black.

In the teams’ first six encounters, the Town managed to score a total of fifteen goals, despite not scoring in any of the three away matches – two goalless draws at Dean Court were followed by a 2-0 defeat in 1925 – but at home, Swindon followed up their 3-0 opening victory with a 4-0 win the following year, and then in early January 1926 they notched eight past the hapless Cherries, despite going 2-0 down in the opening five minutes, with Frank “Swerver” Richardson helping himself to four of the goals.

R = rank: The ranking shown for each measure indicates the efficiency of the sides against the rest of the division as either hosts or the away side | 1 equals the best and 24 is the worst | TheWashbag.com

Town’s lack of possession at the County Ground is hurting the shots per game figure, ranked 21st in League One. Fortunately those with a strike at goal make best use of their limited opportunities.

Bournemouth ‘keeper Shwan Jalal is the weakness in the Cherries’ side, with a 50% chance your shot on target will find the back of the net.

Not much to go on at this early stage in the season, however Town have been strongest and most clinical in the first half and in the final minutes of the half.

With Town having conceded once at the County Ground the focus is on the Bournemouth defence who’ve conceded 6 goals, of which 4 before half time.

My prediction…

1-0 to Swindon.
