Vic Morgan Blog: And So A Happy New Year…

BBC Radio Wiltshire commentator Vic Morgan continues his weekly blog only here on The Washbag.

How was it for you…?

A Saturday without football, but a Saturday with a lot of food and drink….

The absence of watching the Town, was partly made up by watching the Scottish Premier League on the telly.

Not the same obviously, but it was entertaining.

It gave me the chance to think how weekends just aren’t the same without the nervous tension of a Swindon game.

Still, there was still the anticipation of waiting for someone dressed in red and white to deliver…see what I did there…?

The big day itself came and went…again too much food and drink. I got introduced to a cocktail called a “LYNCHBURG LEMONADE”.

I think there was some lemonade in it….although I don’t think too much.

I’m hoping to make its acquaintance again soon, perhaps not too soon though…

And so to Plainmoor….

The beauty of the Boxing Day game was, that because I live in Devon, I didn’t have to leave for the match till around 12-15…very civilized indeed thank you. Most people were expecting a tight affair, and I suppose it was. Torquay came out of the blocks in the first twenty minutes, and took the game to Swindon.

The Gulls look a very useful side.

Their manager, of course, is Town legend Martin Ling. Who with OO Shaun Taylor at his side, is fashioning a very good team.

Only one goal in the first half, and despite Swindon trying their best to get an equaliser after half time, it wasn’t to be.

Manager Paolo Di Canio was his usual forthright self after the game, and I thought honest in his appraisal of the match. I can’t remember too many threats on the Torquay goal, and that was the big disappointment from the match. Credit goes to the thousand plus fans from Wiltshire, and some from Devon of course in the Swindon end.

It goes to show the level of support we have, and many will be there again on Saturday at Northampton, so you might want to read our match preview.

By the way, the commentary position at Plainmoor is right above the touchline. No good if you suffer from vertigo, but a fantastic view of the game.

News after the match that Bournmouth had another bid for Matt Ritchie turned down by the board. Surely an indication that we don’t need to sell. That’s good news for any football fan.

However, we have seen Liam Ridehalgh return to Huddersfield. He’s been terrific for us, and we wish him well. It would be nice to think that we could see him in a Town shirt again soon….fingers crossed.

Also fingers crossed that talks with Crystal Palace over the future of Wes Foderingham, will come to a successful conclusion. Wes would be a great addition on a permanent basis…so keep ‘em crossed.

Cobblers….

On New Years Eve, brings another year of football to a close. What a year…

Terrible back end of last season, saw us rock bottom of League One, and deservedly so. Danny Wilson, who led us to Wembley the season before, eventually left to be replaced by Paul Hart…

Not much to say on that score, suffice it to say…it was a difficult period.

In comes Paolo, and the world’s turned upside down. It’s been an amazing first half to this campaign. I think if there are any doubters left out there, they may stop doubting soon.

Terrific entertainment, great fun, and I hope a wonderful 2012.

Let’s see the old year out in style at Northampton on Saturday.

I’m part of the BBC Wiltshire team at the Sixfields…and don’t forget you can follow me on Twitter @swindonred..

Keep it loud, keep it proud, keep it SWINDON.
