L2 Review: Plymouth shock Cobblers and Bristol Rovers hold Southend

Welcome to another edition of Andrew Steele-Davis’ Npower Football League Two Review, where as usual there is plenty of action to sink your teeth into. Plymouth produced a shock of their own after their embarrassing FA Cup exit in the week and the Play-off picture continues to gather pace.

Let’s start with Plymouth, where the Football League’s bottom club trounced Northampton, who have now conceded a heavy 11 goals in their last two league games.

Plymouth scored three goals in the opening 17 minutes to effectively kill the game off; Simon Walton converted from the penalty spot after a handball before Nick Chadwick, who returned to the club earlier in the week, headed in a second.

Will Atkinson and Ashley Hemmings made it 4-0 before half-time and Adebayo Akinfenwa scored a late consolation. Plymouth are now just three points adrift of safety whilst Northampton’s search for a new manager goes on.
This terrific result earns Plymouth the ‘Performance of the Weekend award’.

Swindon Town continued their recent fine form with a comfortable 2-0 win over Aldershot at the County Ground. Di Canio’s men headed into the game with a chance of making it eleven games unbeaten and the hosts turned it on in the second half to secure those all important three points.

Jake Jervis, on loan from Birmingham, scored from a Paul Caddis cross which was nodded on by loanee Ronan Murray, who was making his debut after joining from Ipswich. Aldershot had a goal rightly disallowed for a push in the back by striker Michael Rankine before defender Darren Jones put through his own net to round off a good afternoon’s work for Swindon.

Cheltenham continue to pressure Crawley and Southend after they comprehensively beat Oxford 3-1. Sido Jombati gave the Robins the lead with a cross cum-shot before James Spencer made it 2-0.

Oxford had Liam Davis sent off but they were given hope when Peter Leven scored from a late free-kick. However, the visitors scored a free-kick off their own through former Swindon player Kaid Mohammed to secure the victory.

A Billy Kee brace continued Burton Albion’s promotion push at the expense of AFC Wimbledon who were on the wrong end of a five goal thriller.

Kee scored the opener before then beating visiting keeper Seb Brown to a long ball and rolling the ball in the back of the net, his eleventh goal in ten games.

Luke Moore pulled a goal back for Wimbledon but Adam Bolder smashed a powerful effort home to make it 3-1. Sam Hatton’s cross was put into his own net by Aaron Webster to give the Don’s hope of snatching a draw but the hosts held to claim all three points.

In a roundup of other results from the weekend, Accrington comfortable dispatched of Dagenham 3-0, Crewe beat Hereford 1-0, Gillingham and struggling Bradford drew 0-0, Crawley beat Rotherham 2-1, Shrewsbury beat Morecambe 2-0 and Southend were held to a 1-1 draw by Bristol Rovers.

The ‘Player of the Weekend’ goes to Billy Kee whose goals continue to push Burton further up the table.
