L2 Review: Shrewsbury notch seven and Crawley maintain pressure on Shrimpers
Welcome to another edition of the ‘Npower Football League Two Review’ which took a break last week due to the first round of the FA Cup, writes Andrew Steele-Davis. As usual, it was goals galore as Shrewsbury hit the net an amazing seven times and Crawley put four past a hapless Oxford United.
First let’s start with the highest scoring game of the weekend, where Shrewsbury trounced a sorry Northampton side 7-2 who are searching for a new manager after the club parted company with Gary Johnson earlier in the week.
The Shrews went into half time three goals to the good thanks to a deflected strike from Aaron Wildig and a brace from explosive winger Mark Wright. Former Swindon player Ben Tozer pulled one back for the hosts with a free-kick just after the restart.
Marvin Morgan score a fourth for the visitors before another former Swindon connection Adebayo Akinfenwa curled in a late consolation. The last few minutes of the game were explosive as Shrewsbury pulled away to compound what has been a miserable week for Northampton.
James Collins and Joe Jacobson notched a goal each before Kelvin Langmead put through his own net to round off a miserable afternoon for the Cobblers.
And this performance earns Graham Turner’s men the ‘Team Performance of the Weekend’ award.
Crawley kept the pressure up on leaders Southend with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Oxford United, Swindon fans, don’t laugh too much.
Tyrone Barnett scored his and Crawley’s first of the afternoon with a low shot and Pablo Mills’ came close to extending the lead but his overhead kick rattled the crossbar. However, the hosts did get their second goal just before the 15 minute mark as Barnett headed home his second of the afternoon as the Red Devils ran riot.
Oxford did get a goal back, the in-form James Constable taking advantage of some awful Crawley defending by rolling the ball into the empty net. But the visitors were not able to build on this and Crawley soon restored their two goal advantage, Andy Drury fired in a low, angled shot just before half time and Dean Howell completed the rout with a 20-yard free-kick, to give Crawley the three points and also the ‘Home Performance of the Weekend’ award.
Rotherham edged a very tense derby day victory over Bradford who are now just a point away from slipping into the relegation zone. The visitors were awarded a penalty after Luke O’Brien handled Brett William’s shot, and Lewis Grabban stepped up to open the scoring.
However, Bradford equalised through a Chris Mitchell header but Alex Revell made it 2-1 with a low shot before Marcus Marshall pounced on a rebound to make it 3-1.
The last 15 minutes were then a tale of two penalties as Bradford skipper Michael Flynn duly converted from 12 yards after Jason Taylor had handled.
Bradford were given another penalty deep into stoppage time, giving them the perfect opportunity to earn a share of the derby day spoils after Tom Newey was also punished for handball. However, Flynn failed to make himself a hero when his spot-kick was saved by Conrad Logan to give Rotherham the bragging rights.
In-form Swindon Town were held to a 1-1 draw by AFC Wimbledon as some very bizarre decisions by the linesman and the referee cost Di Canio’s men the chance to claim all three points.
Sammy Hatton gave the hosts the lead with a deflected effort but Alan Connell scored from close range to ensure Swindon travelled back to Wiltshire with a point.
Swindon should of had a penalty late on in the game when Paul Caddis was hacked down in Wimbledon’s penalty are but the referee opted to give a free-kick and book Caddis for diving instead.
The result means that Town are now unbeaten in ten games whilst Wimbledon have not won in nine.
Southend remained top of the table after overcoming Dagenham 3-2 in the Essex derby. Kane Ferdinand gave the Shrimpers the lead early on, when he converted Ryan Hall’s low cross.
However, the hosts soon tied the game when Christian Montano, on loan from West Ham after a failed loan spell at Swindon, scored on his debut. Liam Dickinson restored Southend’s lead but the Daggers levelled again through Abu Ogogo’s fine 25 yarder effort which wins this week’s ‘Goal of the Weekend Award’.
But the table toppers clinched the three points when Ferdinand scored his second of the afternoon to give Southend their fifth straight League Two victory.
In a roundup of the other results from Saturday’s action, the pressure is increasing on Bristol Rover’s boss Paul Buckle as they lost 2-0 at home to lowly Barnet, Gillingham beat Aldershot 2-1, Cheltenham remain in 3rd place after they beat Port Vale 2-0 at home, Burton Albion edged a five goal thriller against Hereford, Macclesfield and Accrington shared a 1-1 draw, Crewe beat Morecambe 2-1 and Torquay beat struggling Plymouth 3-1.
This week’s ‘Player of the Weekend’ award goes to Torquay’s Eunan O’Kane whose brace sealed his side’s first league win over Devon rivals Plymouth since 1972. The promising youngster has impressed this season and continues to attract admiring glances from further up the football pyramid.
Come back next week where once more we will be assessing all the action from the Npower League Two.
