Vic Morgan Blog: The Cup That Cheered

BBC Radio Wiltshire commentator Vic Morgan continues his weekly blog only here on The Washbag.

It was terrific wasn’t it…?

A performance that made you PROUD to be a Swindon supporter.

Huddersfield came to the County Ground with a great and deserved reputation. Unbeaten in forty odd league games, and demanding the utmost respect. It looked to go with form early on, when the Terriers took the lead through Lee Novak’s strike from the edge of the box. At that time the visitors looked comfortable, and you wondered how many more they might score.

But then….Swindon took over. Four goals, brilliant football, and fantastic atmosphere. It was everything you wanted from an FA Cup tie.

I think the pick of the goals for me was the third.

Simon Ferry, who was superb all afternoon, made a strong run from defence and passed to Etienne Esajas, who’s cross to Mehdi Kerrouche was brilliant and the finish was too. Great goal, great football, a joy to watch.

On the drive back to Devon, I was pondering just how good the game had been.

At half time I had the great pleasure of talking to Colin Prophett, a member of one of my favourite Swindon teams.

In 1974-75 Danny Williams had returned to manage the club. Players of that era included Dave Syrett, David Moss, Peter Eastoe, Kenny Stroud, Trevor Anderson, and Colin as well as many more. They were a terrific team that played all out attacking football.

I mentioned to Colin a 4-1 home win over Colchester that season, which remains one of my all time favourite Swindon performances. It was breathtaking stuff, and Saturday reminded me of that game, just brilliant.

Ironic then that the Town’s reward is an away tie at Colchester…same result would be great.

Well done also to the youth team, who picked up a notable cup success at Bournmouth…yes a very good week indeed.

Enough said about the comments of Sepp Blatter this week.

Suffice it to say that, they were out of touch, insensitive, and should never have been said by someone who runs world football.

I was furious when I heard them, and sadly they might give anyone with the mind, to use offensive language to another human being on a football pitch and get away with it.

Where does it put a referee now..? All someone has to do is say that Sepp Blatter says its okay to use racist language and shake hands….it is NOT NOT NOT NEVER acceptable.

For the love of all things decent Mr. Blatter, come out of your ivory tower and get a taxi out of here.

WOMBLE ON PART TWO….

Yes it was just a few days ago, that the Town made it into the area semi final of the JPT, at the expense of AFC Wimbledon.

This Saturday it’s league points up for grabs at Kingsmeadow. Also at stake a sixth successive clean sheet in League Two. That would equal a club record held by the League Cup winning team of 1968-69, and the great Peter Downsborough.

I was lucky enough to see Peter play on many occasions, and he remains one of my top three Town keepers of all time. I would urge anyone to watch his performance in that League Cup final against Arsenal…they don’t come much better.

So it could be club history on Saturday, and what a great honour for this team that would be. I hope that’s the case, because I’m thrilled to be watching this team. They could just go down as one of the most remembered for a long time….they are really coming together under Paolo Di Canio.

So if you can’t go, remember I’ll be helping with the coverage at Kingsmeadow on BBC Wiltshire, and you can follow me on Twitter @swindonred.

Keep it loud, Keep it proud, Keep it SWINDON.

Vic
