Vic Morgan Blog: Our Crown-ing Glory…
BBC Radio Wiltshire commentator Vic Morgan continues his weekly blog only here on The Washbag.
A long way to Accrington isn’t it..? But boy was it worth it.
A feeling of apprehension about the trip and result, was washed away by one of the Town’s most comfortable displays of the season.
A swift soft drink in the pub that gives the ground its name before the game, and much talk about how it would go. There was also confusion when we were asked to park “vertically”. Mind you a helpful sand bank was available, had we wished to perform such a feat.
It felt like the real football season had arrived too. A lovely day, but cold and clear…it’s what the game’s all about.
Simon Ferry was terrific in midfield, and the new strike partnership grabbed the goals. Aden Flint completely dominated at the back, and our new keeper looked comfortable throughout.
The only disappointment of the day..? We only moved up to eleventh, after such a dominant display….oh that rhymed, sorry about that.
It was great to see so many happy faces after the match, and a real feeling that the season had begun in earnest. Of course, we have to continue that on Saturday at Home Park, more on that later.
ITS BEEN A QUIET WEEK….
Normally, there’s always something coming out of the County Ground to grab the headlines. But, at the time of writing, it all seems really settled.
The debate now turns to the team selection for Saturday. Does Paolo stick with the same team that won at Lancashire, injuries and suspensions allowing, or does he change one or two things, to suit the match…?
I think we counted up that the Town had used 30 players so far this season, which seems an amazing amount. I can remember seasons, when we didn’t have 30 players on the books. Still, it appears that the bedrock of the team is now taking shape, and that some members of the squad will only get limited chances this season. For a manager though, it must be great to have so many to choose from, although at times I can see that being a problem..albeit a good one.
My week has been quite busy, with the highlight being an outside broadcast from the Plymouth Pavillions.
Guitarist Joe Bonamassa was the main attraction, and played a storming set before three thousand fans. My programme tried to show what goes into putting together of a major rock gig. It was fascinating to find out what goes on behind the scenes.
As in football, preparation is the key, and getting everything to fit into place is a major task. Again rather like a football club.
HOME PARK AWAY FROM HOME…..
This Saturday is one of the rare occasions, when I can enjoy a leisurely morning, before setting off to a Town game. Living just outside Exeter, I’ll be able to leave for Home Park around mid-day. So forgive me for feeling a little smug this week, after the 15 hour round trip to Accrington.
Spirits at Plymouth Argyle have been pretty down for some time, due the clubs financial situation.
Administration has been their way of life since February, and many times it’s seemed that the Pilgrims would cease to be. However the decision by the city council this week to buy back Home Park, could have proved the catalyst for Argyle’s survival. Of course that means that the “Theatre of Greens”, will be buzzing, and so the Town will have to be at their very best to get the win.
The FA Cup victory last year was a real highlight for me. A 4-0 win enabled me to enjoy my working week a little more than usual, and I started my Late Show on the Monday after, with the commentary of the fourth goal……I know, but it made me happy.
So then, if you’re coming down the M4,M5, and A38, enjoy…oh and watch out for the new Morrison’s distribution centre by the willow man at Bridgwater, on second thoughts you can’t miss it.
