League Two Review: Rovers and Gillingham win by 5 and Crawley return top

It has been another weekend of scintillating action from the Npower Football League Two as both Bristol Rovers and Gillingham banged in five, Wimbledon’s fine recent run came to an end and Plymouth got their second win of the season, writes Andrew Steele Davis.

Bristol Rovers had that Friday night feeling as they put five past the hapless Rotherham United in a Friday night encounter at the Memorial Ground. Rovers entered the game having lost their last four games whilst Rotherham had also been beaten in their last four league and cup games.

Rotherham had brought former player Guy Branston back to the club midweek in a move to bolster a leaky defence. However, Branston, who is on loan from Bradford, did not enjoy a happy return to the side as he was part of a defence which conceded three goals within the opening half hour and he was later sent off to cap off a miserable debut.

Two goals from Scott McGleish and an effort from Cian Bolger gave Bristol a comfortable three goal cushion before strikes from Rotherham’s Jason Taylor and Danny Schofield reduced the deficit. However, Branston’s sending off curtailed Rotherham’s comeback with Lee Brown and Joe Anyinsah wrapping up the victory for Rovers.

A welcome win for Paul Buckle and his side but the pressure continues to mount on Andy Scott. That win also earns Bristol the ‘Home Performance of the Weekend’ award.

Another team enjoying their night under lights were Cheltenham Town, who’s 2-0 away victory against Burton Albion lifted them to third, albeit only for 24 hours. Goals from Josh Low and James Spencer gave the Robin’s their fourth successive victory and ended Burton’s unbeaten home record.

The third and final game on Friday saw Northampton Town travel to Port Vale looking to bounce back after their defeat at home to Crawley the week before. However the home side had other ideas with Tom Pope, Anthony Griffith and John McCombe netting to give Vale a comfortable victory and send them into the play-off places.

Plymouth who has had their mammoth share of troubles recently, travelled to Dagenham and Redbridge looking for only their second win of the season. That victory did come thanks to goals from sixteen year old Matt Lecointe before a spectacular goal from Conor Hourihane extended their lead, a goal which wins the ‘Goal of the Weekend’ award. Scott Doe and Jon Nurse brought the scores level before Simon Walton’s last minute penalty secured a much welcome three points for Argyle.

That win also gives Plymouth the ‘Team Performance of the Weekend’ award. With a team consisting of youngsters, the trip to London was always going to be a tough one, but the spirit which has shone through so much during the turbulent times at Home Park came out on tops again.

In other results from the weekend, Swindon earned only their second away win of the season with a solid 2-0 victory away at Accrington Stanley, Southend were held to 1-1 draw against Morecambe meaning Crawley moved back to the top of the table after they beat Shrewsbury 2-1. AFC Wimbledon’s fine recent run came to an end after Crewe beat them 3-1, Barnet got a much needed victory over Aldershot, Hereford beat Bradford 2-0, Macclesfield and Oxford played out a 1-1 draw and Gillingham thrashed Torquay 5-2.

Come back next week when once again we will be assessing all the action from the Npower League Two.
