League Two Review: AFC Wimbledon go third and Rotherham drop deeper
It has been another weekend of breathtaking action from the Npower Football League Two as Rotherham and Morecambe continue to slip into free fall mode and AFC Wimbledon continue their amazing climb up the table. Reports Andrew Steele Davis.
If you would have told the Wimbledon fans at the start of the season that their team would be occupying the last automatic promotion berth at the start of October, you would have likely got a few strange looks. However, such is the extent of their meteoric rise from the ashes, you really should not be that surprised.
Going into their game against early pacesetters Morecambe, the Don’s had won their last four propelled by the goals of their dynamic front two Jack Midson and Christian Jolley. Morecambe have proved themselves to be among the favourites to challenge for promotion this season but their recent form has been anything but championship winning fodder.
The match lived up to expectations with Christian Jolley rattling a post early and Luke Moore having a chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot after being brought down by veteran Nick Fenton. However big keeper Barry Roache saved Moore’s powerful effort and Wimbledon were soon made to pay for their missed chances when Stewart Drummond fired home from a Laurence Wilson cross.
The Don’s pride themselves on their character and squad unity and this shone through with Jack Midson, who has been a revelation since his move from Oxford, pulled the visitors level with a rasping shot from 18 yards before Jolley gave Wimbledon all three points with a late header which went in off the post.
The other surprise package of the league this season Cheltenham Town moved up to seventh in the table after their hard fought victory over struggling Dagenham and Redbridge.
Mark Yeates men have certainty started the season as they mean to go on, coming out tops in games against local rivals Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers, both of whom are expected to be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. Alan Bennett scored his first ever goal for the hosts with a fine diving header after Gavin Tomlin had struck the post for the visitors. Dagenham were level on the stroke of half time however as Jon Nurse levelled with a close range finish before James Spencer fired home what proved to be the winner just after half time to send the Cheltenham fans into seventh heaven.
Southend returned to the top of the League Two summit with a 3-1 victory over Crewe. Crewe came closest to opening the scoring; Nick Powell’s powerful effort hit the post before the Shrimper’s Kane Ferdinand gave the visitors the lead with a close range finish. Southend keeper Glenn Morris was kept busy twice thwarting AJ Leitch-Smith with two outstanding saves but he could do nothing about Harry Davies’ superb free-kick which brought the scores level.
With the game seemingly heading for a bore draw, a late brace from the brilliant yet very temperamental Bilel Mohsni wrapped up the win for the visitors and sent them back to the top of the table.
Oxford United stretched their unbeaten run to six games with an easy 3-0 victory over Bristol Rovers, the pressure clearly mounting on boss Paul Buckle. James Constable gave the U’s the lead after Scott Rendell had almost put the visitors ahead. Peter Leven made it two from the penalty spot and Constable made sure of the points with his second of the game.
James Constable’s first goal, a fine strike after a lung bursting run from team-mate Simon Heslop, dully wins this week’s Goal of the Weekend. It is no wonder why Swindon and a number of clubs higher up the leagues are interested in Oxford’s talismanic striker.
Hereford secure the Team Performance of the Weekend after twice coming from behind to hold Paolo Di Canio’s Swindon Side. Hereford, who have struggled this season, only scoring a lowly four times before today’s encounter, dug in deep to frustrate the home side and stay one place above bottom side Plymouth.
In a roundup of the other results, Aldershot slipped to a 2-1 defeat at home to Macclesfield, Bradford earnt an hard earned 1-0 victory over Torquay, Gillingham and Port Vale shared a 1-1 draw, Crawley moved back up to second after beating Northampton in the lunchtime kickoff, crisis club Plymouth could only draw with Accrington at home after being odds on to win, Rotherham slipped to yet another defeat at home to Burton Albion and Shrewsbury beat Barnet in a five goal thriller.
This week’s Player of the Weekend goes to a player who also, in a new feature, wins the player of the month award for September, AFC Wimbledon’s Jack Midson has been a revelation since joining the Don’s from Oxford in the summer, and after scoring again today has now taken his tally so far to eight goals.
So there you have it, another weekend of action from the Npower League Two. Come back next weekend where we will be assessing all the action once more.
