Vic Morgan Blog: The bad, the good and the downright frustrating

BBC Radio Wiltshire commentator Vic Morgan continues his weekly blog only here on The Washbag.

THE BAD, THE GOOD, AND THE DOWNRIGHT FRUSTRATING…

Another mixed week for Swindon Town Football Club.

Last Friday was an evening spent watching Twitter, the Wires, and receiving texts, about the game at Macclesfield.

I felt quite confident about the match at Moss Rose, and fully expected another win off the back of the home victory against Barnet. Sadly it wasn’t to be, and my mood got worse as the bad news came through.

Mind you, I didn’t experience the frustration felt by those who made the journey to Cheshire. The Friday motorway experience is never pleasant, and I know that many only arrived a few minutes before kick off. Well done to those who went, and it’s a shame you didn’t see the win we’d hoped for.

A weekend of gardening followed in the baking Devon sunshine. It was rather pleasurable I have to say, and a trip to see “The Troll Hunter”, at our local Picture House, was very good indeed. If you get the chance to see it you must…and watch out if you’re going to Norway. Avoid the woods at night…

A JERVIS EVENING…

St. James’ Park on a Tuesday night.

Great for me, the shortest away trip of the season. Just six miles from my house, and even better just ten minutes from the BBC Radio Devon studio. So I took an extended lunch break before presenting the South West Late Show, to watch the Town book their place in the next round of the JPT.

I was impressed with the sides display after that defeat at Macclesfield. Jake Jervis was excellent, quick, took some shifting off the ball, and of course got the goals which secured the win. Admittedly, he had a little help from the Exeter ‘keeper for the second, but what the hey.

Obviously, living in Devon, it’s great when we put one over on one of their teams. It’s another season when we play all three, with Plymouth Argyle next up later this month.

Exeter’s ground is a mixture of new and old. The Big Bank, and Flybe Stands, the new, the St. James’ Road terrace, and main grandstand the old. It has great character, and it’s one of football’s oddities, when the trains rumble by at the back of the seating. Sadly though, the cowslips that once grew in front of the Cow Shed are no more, one of those new stands takes their and it’s place…

GETTING BULLISH…

For the visit of Hereford United this weekend. On the face of it, Swindon should take all three points and continue their good home form. However, I’m sure Paolo will tell his men to treat the Bulls with respect. We haven’t got a great record against United, and somehow they’ve always caused us problems.

The older fans amongst us will remember Billy Tucker. Played for Hereford before joining Swindon, and scoring a League Cup equaliser for the Town at Highbury. A 1-1 draw against the Gunners, before a legendary replay win at the County Ground….WHAT A NIGHT.

So let’s hope we can get over the blip at Macc, and continue racking up the points at home. Makes my trip back to Devon on a Saturday evening much more pleasurable.

Follow me on Twitter @swindonred and join me on BBC Wiltshire this Saturday afternoon if you can’t make the game.

Keep it loud, Keep it proud, Keep it SWINDON.
