League Two Review: Southend move top and Bristol Rovers slide

It has been another weekend of unpredictable action from the Npower Football League Two as Bristol Rovers freefall continues, Southend continue to rise and the early season pacesetters continue to stutter. All of the action is assessed here in the latest instalment of Andrew Steele Davis’ League Two Review.

Southend United continued their recent fine form with an outstanding 3-0 victory over Shrewsbury, who have also made a solid start to the new campaign. As all Swindon fans know, Paul Sturrock is the perfect man for a promotion charge in the lower leagues, and despite a slow start, the Shrimpers are now soaring.

Liam Dickinson, Mark Phillips and Neil Harris got the goals for Southend which also earns them this week’s ‘Team Performance of the Weekend’. What bet another promotion for ‘Luggy’ come the end of the season?

AFC Wimbledon are another team on the up proving to everyone that their aim this season is much more than just staying in the league. Sitting in the lofty position of fourth place, Terry Brown’s side are defying expectations and their 3-1 home win over Gillingham continued that trend. A brace from Christian Jolley and yet another goal from Jack Midson earned the Dons their much deserved victory and they also bag this week’s ‘Home Performance of the Weekend’.

Bristol Rovers continue to slide down the table, their 3-1 defeat at the hands of this season’s surprise package Cheltenham Town proving that Paul Buckle’s team won’t have everything their own way this season.

A brace from former Swindon man Kaid Mohammed in-between a Luke Summerfield effort gave Cheltenham Town the win and it was Mohammed’s first goal that wins this week’s ‘Goal of the Weekend’. The winger received the ball from Jimmy Spencer near the halfway line and raced 50 yards into the Rovers box before sliding his shot past Scott Bevan. A truly magnificent effort which is well worth a watch on YouTube.

Crawley Town climbed back into second place with a solid 2-0 win over Plymouth. Matt Tubbs grabbed both goals in a decent performance by the former Salisbury front man and this display earns him the ‘Player of the Weekend’. Question marks were raised over whether Tubbs would be able to repeat his goal scoring heroics from Crawley’s conference wining campaign from last season but with six goals already to his name, expect him to pass the 20 goal landmark this season. That is if he stays with the Devils, with reported interest from the Championship.

In a brief roundup of the other results from the league, Accrington Stanley edged a five goal thriller against Aldershot, Barnet slipped to yet another defeat against Northampton, Burton Albion and Bradford shared a 2-2 draw, Dagenham and Redbridge edged Crewe 2-1, Hereford continue to prove that they are favourites for the drop, losing yet again, this time at the hands of Oxford, Swindon’s away day woes continue, losing to Macclesfield in what was a Friday night game, Port Vale beat Rotherham 2-0 and Torquay shared the points with Morecambe who slip to third.
