Elliot Benyon moves to Wycombe on a season loan
After only joining Swindon Town from Torquay United for a reported £80,000 in January as Danny Wilson’s ‘replacement’ for Charlie Austin, Elliot Benyon has today confirmed a season long loan to League One new boys Wycombe Wanderers.
As Elliot moves to Buckinghamshire, it has left Billy Bodin as our only recognised forward and me living in the hope this transfer wouldn’t have been allowed unless replacements were soon to be announced.
A proven League Two goalscorer, Benyon failed to make any impact in League One, albeit in a fading team whilst recovering from injury, so his move back up to the third tier is a little more than surprising.
So did Elliot move of his own will, or was he gently shoved towards the County Ground exit?
Wycombe is his hometown club. Their promotion back to League One has given him the opportunity to be part of something he always dreamt off and closer to home. Perhaps a move made possible by a release clause triggered by our relegation to League Two.
It has always been an ambition of mine to play for Wycombe and I can’t wait to get started.
Or did Paolo Di Canio consider Elliot didn’t have enough to be a regular in his side, so why turn down an opportunity to cut our loses now and remove Benyon from the payroll?
I’m inclined to believe it was a bit of both.
From what I witnessed, Elliot didn’t cut it in League One, making just 7 shots in 12 appearances and his only goal late on in his debut. He doesn’t have enough pace, the strength or skill to really threaten. Whilst he had scored a few in League Two for Torquay, he hardly set the world alight with 39 goals in 125 appearances.
Either way, what this move just demonstrates is how desperate Danny Wilson was to make amends on transfer deadline day and bring in a striker. Good money, our money, ultimately wasted, at least for now.
A season at Wycombe could be just what Elliot needs to take him to the next level. So with his contract here not due to expire until June 2013, either we get the benefit on the pitch next year or hopefully have the chance to recoup some cash.
