The Friday STFC Stat: When Goals Are Scored
It’s time to get the spreadsheet out again and dig into the numbers to see during which periods of play Swindon and our opposition have been lethal in front of goal.
| First Half | 1-15 | 16-30 | 31-45 | 45+ | |
| Swindon | 2 (10%) | 2 (10%) | 4 (20%) | 1 (5%) | 45% |
| Opposition | 7 (33.3%) | 2 (9.5%) | 0 | 0 | 42.86% |
33% of our opponent’s goals have been scored in the first 15 minutes! No wonder we’ve been on the backfoot, chasing games and haven’t been able to dictate the game in the way we’d prefer. This is best demonstrated by our record when scoring first when we’ve won 3, drawn 1 and lost 2. Also in 2009/2010 we were near invincible after scoring first.
We are clearly in the ascendancy in the 15 minutes before half time, scoring 4 goals whilst conceding zero, at least we have the mindset to tighten up before the break.
| Second Half | 46-60 | 61-75 | 76-90 | 90+ | |
| Swindon | 1 (5%) | 7 (35%) | 2 (10%) | 1 (5%) | 55% |
| Opposition | 3 (14.3%) | 4 (19%) | 2 (9.5%) | 3 14.3%) | 57.14% |
It’s the second half our our games that the majority of goals are scored in Town matches so far. Again, like the start of the first half, our opponents have the upper hand immediately after the break. So that’s 3 Town goals compared to 10 opposition goals immediately after the start of each 45.
With 7 goals between 61-75 minutes Town get back into the games, however the number of late opposition goals has cost us recently. All of the 5 opposition goals post 75 minutes have all come in the last 5 games with a late goal in each. Late goals by Peterborough, Plymouth and Dag & Red have resulted in defeats, whilst the late Leyton Orient goal was the only time we’ve subsequently scored. A worrying trend.
So let’s hope for an early goal at Yeovil…..although judging by this it’s unlikely Town will score first!
