Every Goal Counts
Despite a few moments of individual skill and good link up play in the second half, last night’s 4-2 win over struggling Oldham Athletic was perhaps the poorest 4-2 match I’ve ever seen. Also, isn’t 4-2 such a naff scoreline and makes the match seem a fantastic goalfest when most of the match was very poor!
But what I’m more deeply concerned about is that whilst a win is important, improving our goal difference needs to in the forefront of our players minds. In particular Mr Smith in goal.
At the moment the top eight teams are moving ahead of mid-table and most likely to be the group pushing for the promotion places. As is often usual at the end of the season, goal difference will be a deciding factor in who makes the play-offs and sorts who eventually will play each other.
Forgetting Norwich and Leeds United who I can’t see realistically being caught for the automatic places, this leaves Charlton +2o, Colchester +16, Swindon +10, Millwall +12, Huddersfield +20 and MK Dons with +6.
Our goal difference has improved a lot since November, but we can’t afford to keep conceeding needless goals like last night as we attempt to get on a par, if not ahead of our play-off challengers.
Anyway, on the bright side… we are at least now safe from relegation with 52 points in early February!
