Two defeats in a week and it means that Swindon Town find themselves back in the scrap towards the bottom of the table.

The first loss came against in form Barnsley, who came with a game plan and left with the three points. To be fair, a goalless draw would have been just. Both sides struggled to create any entertainment and it looked certain that Swindon’s first nil-nil of the campaign was upon us.

Sadly, the Tykes nicked a late winner and a late win. It was the sort of game you’ve forgotten about five minutes after it finished. How we longed for a reappearance of the County Ground fox. You know the one. It sprinted from the Town End to the Stratton Bank in record time against Gillingham. Perhaps it’ll do the double at the Priestfield on Saturday.

During the game there was much talk about who we may or may not sign before the closure of the transfer window. The future of Yasser Kasim was much discussed and there was talk of the re-signing of Jack Stephens. In the end Kasim stays put and Stephens has been sent to Coventry.

Swindon have made one addition with Louis Thompson back for the remainder of the season. While I can understand the frustration of the Town fans over the lack of new signings, I can also understand why there hasn’t been an influx of new faces.

Think back sixteen years this week. Swindon Town went into administration. Losing thousands of pounds every week, the club was on the brink. Without too much knowledge of the actual state of the finances at the club, it seems that it’s on a sound footing.

The argument against spending money on players would be, that with chances of the play offs all but disappearing, why spend now? Why not wait until the summer before adding to the squad? That assumes of course we don’t go down. It also means that the group can be a little threadbare. It’s worth remembering the loan window reopen next week, so there’s still the possibility of a new face.

The pressure on a small squad was ironically evident on Tuesday at Port Vale. The much postponed fixture eventually getting the go ahead. The pre match talk was about the Town line up. Devoid of Ajose, Branco and Turnball because of injury. A dearth in Central defence and attack. A chance for the likes of Jemain Hylton and Jeremy Balmy to step up.

A goal conceded early in the game wasn’t ideal and it seemed we were in for a long night. Swindon though dominated possession for the remainder of the match but without the necessary penetration. The most positive aspect though was the debut of teenager Jordan Young. No sign of nerves and comfortable on the ball. Jordan looks a great prospect and I’m looking forward to seeing more of him. Lee Marshall also did well. The Town youngsters certainly doing their bit. So all is not doom and gloom.

Back to back defeats then and a trip to high flying Gillingham. No doubt about it a tough few games. The wisdom of not bringing in new players will be put to the test over the next couple of weeks.
